KiwiSaver Changes – What You Need To Know

From 1 April 2026, the minimum KiwiSaver contribution rates will increase from 3% to 3.5%.  This increase applies to both Employee and Employee contributions.

You will need to ensure your payroll system is updated to reflect these changes.

Temporary rate reduction

Inland Revenue is introducing an option to allow employees to reduce their KiwiSaver contributions back to 3% for a period of three months up to one year.

  • Employees can apply for this reduction through my IR from 1 February 2026.
  • Employers may also reduce their contribution to 3% where:
    • The employee provides a valid rate reductions certificate, or
    • Inland Revenue notifies the employer directly of the employee’s approve rate reduction.

Future Change

From 1 April 2028, the minimum KiwiSaver contribution rate will increase further to 4% for both employees and employers.
