Karl Ruby
Director
Karl is the chameleon of the group. He is an accountant by day and a search-and-rescue volunteer by night. He also serves as the treasurer for Tauranga Search and Rescue and the New Zealand Institute of Private Investigators.
Karl’s primary role at TCOB is that of Accountant and Advisor. His days are filled with preparing financial reports, analysing data for forensic investigations and handling client inquiries. Karl loves meeting clients, learning about their businesses, and uncovering what drives their success. Karl’s relevant experience started in 1996 when he joined the police, working his way up to Detective and working on homicides, kidnappings and other serious and high-profile cases. 2005, he commenced working as a private investigator before joining Inland Revenue in 2006.
At Inland Revenue, Karl became a Specialist Investigator, focusing on fraud and evasion cases. He also earned his Bachelor of Accounting through Massey University and became a certified fraud examiner during this time. Renowned for his expertise in tax, Karl played a key role in developing policies and operational frameworks for IRD operations nationwide.
Karl’s time in the police and Inland Revenue frequently required him to provide evidence in court. This experience, combined with his advanced investigative skills, accounting knowledge, and ability to articulate a client’s position clearly, makes him a highly reliable and credible expert witness.
Originally from Wellington, Karl has lived in Tauranga since 2005. He has four children, ages 4 to 27. Much of his spare time is dedicated to volunteer work, but he treasures moments spent with family and friends whenever possible.
Megan Ruby
Director
Megan is the perfectionist, proofreader, and grammar police at TCOB. Her main role is managing clients’ day-to-day bookkeeping, GST and AIM returns, and all things Xero. She loves helping clients better understand their accounts.
Megan’s experience in the industry started in 2006, working at Inland Revenue. Nine of her 10 years there were as an investigator. Megan’s passion was for fraud and evasion investigations and the prosecutions relating to such cases. She also completed several technical audits and GST refund checks. Megan enjoyed the varied workload and gained advanced knowledge in all areas of tax as a result. Whilst working for Inland Revenue, Megan completed a Bachelor of Business Studies with a major in Accounting through Massey University.
Before starting Taking Care of Business, Megan gained invaluable experience working as the management accountant for a local building firm and some smaller companies in the engineering and construction industry.
Megan lives in the Lakes with her husband, Karl, and their two children, Ella and Ashleigh. She lives by a motto of working hard and playing hard. Often working long hours in the evenings and weekends, Megan ensures that hard work is rewarded with holidays, catching up with friends, and relaxing on the couch with a delicious wine in hand.
Mike
Consultant
Mike’s interest in accounting started in 1982 at Auckland University when he completed his first year of a Bachelor of Commerce. He went on to do his big OE before deciding he wanted better work stories rather than completing his degree. This led to a 10-year career in the New Zealand Police, with his final three years as a detective.
In 1995, Mike returned to his hometown of Tauranga, spending a few years in private investigations before dedicating 20 years to investigating tax evasion at Inland Revenue.
Despite his serious investigative background, Mike is anything but the fun police. Known for his unfiltered humour, he’s the “I hope you can take a joke” kind of guy, no matter the audience. Political correctness? Not his strong suit.
Mike’s expertise lies in thorough analysis, driven by a relentless pursuit of facts. He has a talent for breaking down complex information and presenting his findings clearly, whether speaking to clients, accountants, lawyers or judges.
Mike’s straightforward attitude, honest approach, and raw humour make him a natural fit for TCOB. In addition to his extensive life experience, his qualifications include a Diploma in Police Studies, a Level 5 Certificate in Financial Advising, and a certification as a fraud examiner.
